AIDS and Porn

Now we have all sat down and enjoyed a good laugh at some of the most ridiculous positions, story-lines, and acting that goes on in a low budget porn. Its surprising to many, that people actually are more then willing to do what ever a director says just to make a few extra bucks, but how far are they willing to go? For most porn stars, partaking in an unprotected sex scene isn't uncommon, I mean what viewer wants to see a man take out a condom and practice safe sex, probably not most. However recently there has been an AIDS outbreak in the porn industry, resulting in many of the actors/actresses to not partake in unprotected sex scenes. However, its common knowledge that there is a gestation period when one contracts the HIV virus, so why are people still willing to put themselves at risk? And why is it that the government hasn't done more to institute more regulations concerning the porn industry? One reason might be that if the government were to make regulations on actions done in the porn industry, that would mean the government would have to admit that there is an actually porn industry. Something I'm not sure they are willing to do yet. So the next time you sit down in front of the computer to watch you newly downloaded porn, check how many times you see a condom… I'm gonna guess not many.

Birth Control

Still, today in many high schools the idea of birth control is a very touchy subject. But, Why? What person would ever wish that a 16 year old girl was pregnant? you are probably thing no one would, however everyday situations such as this one arise. Why is it so morally wrong to admit that in the United States today young teens are becoming more sexually experimental at a younger age? If as a whole society we could admit this then maybe we would be able to come to grips that birth control options need to be more accessible. Very few young teens want to admit that they are sexually active to their parents or their doctors, so as a result they arn't being informed of the many options they can use. In this new age where STD's , AIDS, and teen pregnancy is running rampant with no end in sight, why arn't condoms being offered for free. Why can't society come to grips that giving a young teen a condom doesn't necessarily mean they are going to become sexually active as a result, it just means that if they make that decision, the end result won't be pregnancy!

Sex Talk

How many of you bloggers out there have flipped through the cable channels and you your surprise you stop on an old lady talking about sex? Sex Talk, which is a sexual education show which allows viewers to call in and dish about their person sexual dilemmas. Most of these stories are a result of sexual frustration toward the other partner, or sexual curiosity. Although this may seem like a pretty normal show, the crazy twist lies with the host. Sue Richardson, the host, is a 55 year old women, and by the way she talks in her prime she must have been the happiest lady around. She shows sexual techniques using barbie like dolls, shows viewers the the most effective way to use numerous toys, and explains to the viewers the sex is suppose to be enjoyable. Overall, this is one of the most unique shows that airs on television today. So if you are ever flipping through the cable stations on a Sunday night at 11, be sure to flip to Oxygen to watch a master at work.

Getting Old..

Recently I was enjoying a cold brew at a local restaurant when a lady around the age of Forty began conversing with me. Mind you she was on the verge of getting cut off, but it seemed that as a result of the alcohol she was willing to share her experiences about sex with me, as a way to educate the youth. She first began her story tell myself and my fellow drinking mates that men under the age of 30 arn't even worth sleeping with. This made some sense to us younger women as many times we seem to be left unsatisfied. She went on to say that by the age of 30 all males have mastered the art of pleasing a women. Later after a few more drinks and a few more stories she decided to leave us for the night with our minds full of crazy new ideas. So world… what do you think… are men better after the ago of 30?

Cable Porn

I recently heard that our local cable provider had made the decision that they were going to be adding hardcore pornoraphy as one of their many on-demand options. As we have all learned the pornography industry pretty much equals a profit, so for a business I can understand the reasons behind their decision. Yet how much more accessible can we make pornography. Anyone with the internet can type a few words and up pops thirteen websites featureing porn for free. One can drive home from work and find a least 2 or 3 adult video stores on the way. So why do we have to make another option. This decision can ensure that now people can sit on their couch and at a push of a button enjoy watching their favorite positions. This decision just goes to show that we live in a very lazy society and that we wont’ stop until we can have everything we desire within minutes.

In this day and age it is hard to understand not having porn at your fingertips. But when you think back to the early 1970′s its not hard to understand why porn was socially unacceptable. During the 1960′s the porn industry was trying to establish a storyline to make their movies more mainstream. They did just this throught he movie “Deep Throat” that aired in 1972. However by doing this they forced Linda Lovelace to perform many acts against her wills. As we learned through our lecture the movie was completly funded by mob money. This porn is believed to have grossed around $600 million dollars, and this was a result of the mobsters leaning on the theatre owners to play the film and then demanding 50% of the profits for the owners. Yet, even after all the profits Linda told the world that she had a gun against her head and she was being raped throughout the movie, and that she believed that it is a crime that people are still watching this porn today. Although due to this film, pornagraphy became socially accepted but was it worth the victimization of one women?

Sex Toys

I recently attended a common pre-marital ritual amoung women, a sex toy party. Here women congregate in bunches in order to giggle and admire many interesting pieces. My horizon broadened when I was told about the importations of these sex toys. Apparently the primary importer of sex toys into America is China. However, the United States doesn’t allow sex toys to be imported into our country. So in order to import these appliances the Chinese impress smiley faces,animals, and other child-like symbols in order to qualify them as “toys.” As a result women have to tickle themselves with a tip if a hummingbirds nose, or the trunk of an elephant, or look at a smiley face. I just find it slightly humorous that in order for it to be formally ok by the government that women pleasure themselves that they must do it by using animated “toys.”

Art or Pornography?

I have recently finished watching the lecture on Pre-electronic pornography, and I was very interested in all the ancient art pieces that depicted sexual acts or ideas. I guess I knew that throughout history other cultures had depicted female and male forms participating in acts of erotica, however I wasn’t fully aware to the extent that things were depicted. I am assuming that these pictures and/or statues were available to the public but were they viewed in the same ways that erotic pictures are thought of today. Were these pictures used as more of a basis for art and expression of sexual contact, or were these pictures used for the simple pleasures they induce today? For some reason I find it hard to believe that artisans put their time and effort into building their art only for it to be enjoyed by the lude act of self-enjoyment.

Then came about the wonderful world of photography, and with that came nude photographs. With this new technology people could now see real-life depictions of women, men, and the interactions between the two. But does this make it pornography? Everyday right here at the university people draw real life pictures of nude models, and to society this is an acceptable form of art. But how can one distinguish between these two art forms stating that nude art is ok, but nude photography is too close to pornography?

Hello fellow UBers,

My name is Ashley and I am currently a senior at UB, which means this is my last elective at this University! I signed up late for this course as a result of the lack of classes offered and because I have a few friends who took this class last semester and seemed to enjoy themselves. So far I have only watched the first two lectures and am just setting up my blog, which is something that I have never done before. As a psychology major I am very interested to read how others feel about this issues and logistics behind the porn business. I am also interested in seeing how far and to what extreme people are willing to break away from the moral norm of pornography.
